Millions of students all over the world use Handwriting Without Tears. Our easy-to-teach, easy-to-learn curriculum makes handwriting mastery joyful for students. Research supports the active teaching of handwriting. Recent findings demonstrate that writing by hand improves creative writing skills and fine motor skills. In fact, elementary students have been found to write more and faster by hand than when keyboarding. And with the adoption of the Common Core State Standards, the emphasis and expectations placed on classroom note-taking and expository writing in grades K–5 is greater than ever.
We teach actively and explicitly in a developmental sequence. Our program uses multisensory teaching to incorporate all the senses in a fun and engaging way, ensuring that all children learn regardless of learning style or background. We teach the easiest skills first, then build on prior knowledge. Our teaching sequence takes advantage of child development and brain research to promote effective learning and good habits.
The child watches as the teacher writes and then imitates the teacher.

The child writes unassisted, without a demonstration or a model.
Teaching letters in a developmental order helps children master skills and boosts confidence. We teach capitals first, and then lowercase letters. All letters are taught in small groups of similar formation. Children master the easier letter groups, and then move to the more difficult letters groups.
